CHAP. 248.

merchandise; and for every description of properly en-
trusted to their care, the company shall hold themselves
liable, the dangers of the sea and fire alone excepted.

SEC. 11. And be it enacted, That the said company
shall establish and appoint good and trusty agents in the
cities of Baltimore and Philadelphia, who shall dispose
of all such grain, marketing or any kind of country pro-
duce to the best advantage, and who shall use all dili-
gence to obtain the highest market rates, and who shall
make use of every exertion to promote the interests and
advantages of all such agriculturalists as may entrust
their produce to the care of the company; the said com-
pany to receive or allow their agent such compensation
or such commissions on purchases or sales as is usual to
allow or to be received in such cases.

Right of action.

SEC. 12. And be it enacted, That nothing in this act
shall be construed to impair the rights of any person or
persons to an action against said company, their agents,
workmen or servants, for any damage done to his, her,
or their property or persons.

Report semi-
annually.

SEC. 13. And be it enacted, That the president and
directors of said company, shall cause a report to be
made semi-annually to the stockholders of said company,
showing the amount expended by said company in the
purchase or construction of boats, wharves, warehouses,
the amount of freights, commissions and passage receiv-
ed, and the amount of expenses incurred during the same
period; and that the said president and directors shall
semi-annually, at such times and places as the by-laws
of said company shall direct, make and declare a divi-

dend of the nett profits of said company; and whereas,
it appears to this General Assembly, that the creation of
a steam freighting company, having for its object the ac-
commodation of the farming interest, is well calculated to
develope the agricultural resources of a large part of the
State situated on the waters of the Chesapeake bay and
its tributaries, to enhance the value of real estate, and
thereby increase the revenue of the Commonwealth, and
this General Assembly in full view of all these results,
and earnestly desiring their accomplishment, is willing
by proper inducements, to stimulate individual energy
and individual wealth, to the formation of a company
having for its object such public benefits — therefore,

have full power to transport passengers and freight, of
every description, via the Chesapeake and Delaware
