CHAPTER 277.

CHAP. 278,

An act entitled, an act to authorise the Commissioners of
the Tax of Saint Mary's County, to sell or repair the
County Jail.

10, 1845.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the commissioners of the tax of Saint
Mary's county, be and they are hereby authorised and em-
powered, if to them it may seem proper and expedient,
to sell or dispose of the county jail of said county, in such
manner and upon such terms as to them may seem most

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That should the commis-
sioners of said county deem it inexpedient or improper to
sell or dispose of said jail, then said commissioners are
hereby authorised to levy on the taxable inhabitants of
said county, such sum or sums of money as they may
deem necessary to repair said jail, and render it secure
and suitable for the purposes for which it was intended.
SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That it shall not be lawful
for said commissioners to proceed under this act, until
after the first day of April next ensuing its passage.

CHAPTER 278.

 

An act concerning the Draining of Swamps and Low
Grounds, by the laying out and opening of Public
Ditches, in Worcester, Queen Anne's, and Dorchester
Counties.

8, 1845.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That whenever a majority of the owners of any
swamps or low grounds shall deem it fit to have such
swamp low ground ditched and drained, they may peti-
tion the levy court or county commissioners as the case
may be sitting in the county where such swamp or low

ground or any part thereof is situated for the appointment

of commissioners to lay out a ditch or ditches for that

purpose, and the said levy court or commissioners shall

thereupon appoint three judicious and impartial freehold-

ers of the neighborhood as such commissioners.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That it shall be the duty of

the commissioners after being duly sworn or affirmed, to

execute their duties under this act, faithfully and imparti-
