1844.

agency for the purchase or sale of the stock or goods of
said company, without the consent expressed in writing of
the holders of at least one-half the capital stock of said
company, which consent shall at all times be revocable at
the pleasure of those who shall give the same.

CHAP. 272.

SEC. 8. And be it enacted, That this act shall continue
in force for thirty years from the time of its passage, and
that this General Assembly reserves to itself the right to
alter and annul the same at its pleasure.

An act to incorporate the Newton University.

Passed March
8, 1845.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That from and after the passage of this act,
the seminary of learning in the city of Baltimore, State of
Maryland, known as the Maryland Institute, shall be and
the same is hereby constituted a University, under the
name and title of the Newton University.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the said University re-
cognizing the being and government of Almighty God,
shall be founded and continued on the plan of the great
social and political institutions of the United Stales, hav-
ing respect to the liberal and enlightening principles on
which they are founded, and that no rules, laws or regula-
tions of a sectarian or party character, either in religion or
politics shall ever be adopted, or imposed by which any
student shall be subjected or made liable to any disabili-
ties or disadvantages whatever, on account of his political
or religious opinions.
