NOVEMBER. LAWS OF MARYLAND.

 

CHAP. LXXXIII.

Passed 4th of
Jan. 1807.

An ACT to lay out and streighten a road from Towson's tavern, on
the Baltimore turnpike road, to intersect the Pennsylvania line at
major David Wiley's.

Preamble.

WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, that the streightening the road from
Towson's tavern, on the York turnpike, in Baltimore county, in the direction to major Da-
vid Wiley's on the Pennsylvania line, would be productive of much convenience and benefit; there.
fore,

Commissioners
appointed, &c.

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That William Johnson, Joshua Steven-
son and William Hutchings, of Baltimore county, and Jesse Jarrett and Andrew Turner, of Har-
ford county, be appointed commissioners, and they, or a majority of them, authorised and required
to view and lay down a correct plot of the aforesaid road, in the nearest and best direction, and on
the best ground, but not to pass through the yard, orchard or garden, of any person or persons
without their consent.

Who are to re-
turn a plot, &c.

III. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the aforesaid commissioners, or a majority of them, shall re-
turn the aforesaid plot, with the probable expence of opening and streightening the aforesaid road,
to the next general assembly.

Then allow-
ance, &c.

IV. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the commissioners appointed by this act shall each have an al-
lowance of two dollars for every day they shall severally attend in discharge of the duties required
by this act, and the levy court of Baltimore and Harford counties, at the meeting of their next levy
court, are hereby directed to levy such sum as shall appear due to the commissioners aforesaid,
which sum shall be collected and paid over as other county charges are collected and paid.

CHAP. LXXXIV.

Preamble.

An ACT for the punishment of forgery, and for other purposes.

WHEREAS it has been represented to this general assembly, that the crime of forging bank
notes and negotiable notes hath greatly increased, and the punishment already provided by
law not being thought sufficient to prevent the commission of the crime; for remedy thereof,

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That any person who shall, with a frau-
dulent intent, employ an artist to engrave or etch any plate in imitation of the note or notes of any
established bank within this state, or of any bank which may hereafter be established within this
state, or which are or may be established by law in any of the United States, or any person engaged
in engraving or etching such plate or plates, or any person in any manner engaged in striking im-
pressions from such plate or plates, or any person who shall affix to such notes fraudulent or forged
signatures, or any person who shall be in any manner concerned in the altering, forging or counter-
feiting, any note of any bank now existing within this state, or of any bank which may hereafter be
established within this state, or any person who may pass within this state forged or counterfeited
nous, (knowing them to be such, ) purporting to be the genuine notes of a bank regularly constituted
within any of the United States, or any person who may pass as genuine any note, purporting to be
a note of a bank which does not exist, or shall pass as genuine negotiable notes any forged or coun-
terfeit negotiable notes or paper whatsoever, or who shall erase or alter any genuine negotiable note
or negotiable paper, or any endorsement thereupon, or shall tender in payment, or in any way utter,
any such erased, altered or counterfeited note or notes, or negotiable paper, (knowing such bill or
note, or negotiable paper, or the endorsement thereon, to be altered, forged, counterfeited, erased
or falsified, ) with intention to defraud the said bank or banks, or any other person, shall be adjudged
a felon, and shall be condemned to death, without benefit of clergy.
CHAP. LXXXV.

Passed 4th of
Jan. 1807.

An ACT authorising the levy courts of Anne-Arundel and Prince-
George's counties to levy a sum of money for building a bridge
over Patuxent river, at Queen-Anne,

Preamble.

WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, that the bridge over Patuxent river, at
Queen-Anne, has become dangerous, and almost impassable, from the decayed state of the
same, and that it would greatly conduce to the convenience of the inhabitants of said counties, and
the public generally, that a new bridge be erected at the place aforesaid; therefore,
