poses of this act provided always, that a majority of the trustees in being shall be necessary to
form a quorum for the transaction of business.
VI. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the aforesaid trustees, and their successors, by the name afore-
said, shall be able and capable in law to sue and be sued, implead and be impleaded, answer and be
answered, defend and be defended, in all and any court or courts of justice whatsoever, and also to
make and use a common seal, and the same to break or renew at pleasure.

An ACT to authorise the justices of the levy court of Washington
county to assess a sum of money on the taxable property of said
county for the purposes therein mentioned.
WHEREAS it is represented by the petition of the trustees of the poor of Washington, county,
that the poor-house of said county is too small for the accommodation of the poor and per-
sons of insane mind, and that for the want of such accommodations they have frequently been una-
ble to receive such applicants: And whereas the monies heretofore levied have not been sufficient
to erect a smoke-house and purchase a burial-ground, for said poor-house; therefore,
II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland That the levy court of Washington
county shall and they are hereby directed and empowered to assess and levy, in the year eighteen
hundred and six, on all the property in said county subject and liable to assessment, a sum of money,
not exceeding twelve hundred dollars, which shall be paid over to the trustees of the poor of said
county, who shall apply it to the erection of such additional buildings as they may deem necessary,
and also to the purchase of a lot or lots for a burial-ground for said poor-house.

An ACT to authorise and empower the levy court of Worcester
county to levy annually a sum of money, on the assessable property
of said county for the purposes therein mentioned.
WHEREAS Joseph Tilghman, by his petition to this general assembly, hath set forth, that he
has been afflicted in a manner so as to render him incapable of obtaining a livelihood; that
he has a daughter named Betsy Tilghman, about the age or seventeen years, who has been an help-
less object for the last fifteen years: And whereas John Toadvine and Severn Tarr, and Elijah Tarr,
in behalf of his daughter Anne Tarr, of said county, by their petitions to this general assembly
have also set forth, that they are poor and infirm, and are rendered unable to support themselves by
labour, and praying that an act may pass authorising the levy court of Worcester county to levy a
sum of money on, the assessable property of said county for the support and maintenance of the said
Joseph Tilghman and Betsy Tilghman his daughter, John Toadvine, Severn Tarr, and Elijah Tarr,
in behalf of his said daughter Anne Tarr; and the facts stated in the said petitions appearing to be
true, therefore,
II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the levy court of Worcester coun-
ty shall be and they are hereby directed and empowered, at their levy court annually, so long as
they shall see cause, to assess and levy on the assessable property of the said county a sum of money,
not exceeding one hundred and twenty-five dollars, for the support, and maintenance of the said Jo-
seph Tilghman and Betsy Tilghman his daughter, John Toadvine and Severn Tarr, and Elijah Tarr,
in behalf of his said daughter Anne Tarr, and that the same be collected, annually by the collector
or collectors of Worcester county, and paid to such person as the levy court of said county shall or
may direct.

C H A P. IX.
An ACT to open a road, from Barnsville, in Montgomery county, to Za-
chariah Maccubbin's mill, and thence to intersect the main road
leading from Frederick-town to George-town, at or near Log-town,
WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, by the petition of sundry inhabitants of
Montgomery county, that they experience great inconvenience for want of a road from
Barnsville to Zachariah Maccubbin's mill, and thence to intersect the main road leading from Frede-
rick-town to George-town, at or near Log-town, and praying; a law may pass appointing commissi-
oners to open a road, at the expence of the county, on the most direct course from Barnsville to
