in certain more populous counties of the State the gravity
of judicial burdens requires some addition to the basic
salary of the Judges residing therein; and
Whereas, The said Commission recommends that the
salaries of the Judges of the Court of Appeals ought to
be increased SINCE SAID SALARIES ARE LOWER
THAN THOSE OF SOME LOWER COURT JUDGES;
now therefore
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That Section 48 of Article 26 of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1951 Edition), entitled "Courts", sub-
title, "Salaries of Judges", be and it is hereby repealed
and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:
48. (a) The salary of the Chief Judge of the Court of
Appeals shall be [Seventeen Thousand Five Hundred Dol-
lars] TWENTY Thousand Dollars ($20, 000) per annum;
the salary of each of the Associate Judges of the Court
of Appeals shall be [Sixteen Thousand Five Hundred
Dollars] NINETEEN Thousand Dollars ($19, 000) per
annum.
(b) The salary of each of the several Judges of the
Supreme Bench of Baltimore City shall be Nine Thousand
Five Hundred Dollars ($9, 500. 00) per annum.
(c) The salary of each of the Judges of the several Cir-
cuit Courts of the first seven Judicial Circuits shall be
Thirteen Thousand Dollars ($13, 000. 00) per annum. ex-
cept for such of the Judge of the Circuit Courts of the
Third Circuit who shall reside in Baltimore County, such
of the Judges of the Circuit Courts of the Sixth Circuit who
shall reside in Montgomery County, and such of the Judges
of the Circuit Courts of the Seventh Circuit who shall re-
side in Prince George's County, whose salaries shall be

(d) Whenever the salary of a Circuit Judge from any
of the several counties shall be greater than Thirteen
Thousand Dollars ($13, 000. 00) per annum, the County
Commissioners in the County wherein resides any such
Judge are hereby authorized and directed to levy such tax
as may be necessary and sufficient to carry out the pro-
proceeds of the general tax levy to the extent that the salary
of any such Judge residing in any such county shall exceed
the sum of Thirteen Thousand Dollars ($13, 000. 00) per
