THE COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION HIS REA-
SONS FOR SUCH REFUSAL TO APPROVE OF THE
APPOINTMENT OF SUCH PERSON. Provided that all
County Superintendents of Schools holding office at the
time when this Act shall take effect, shall continue to serve
to the end of the term for which they were originally
appointed, and until their successors qualify, unless re-
moved, as hereinafter provided, and shall also be eligible
for reappointment. [; and provided, further, that]

(b) All County Superintendents of Schools shall be
paid, beginning with the school year £1947-48] 1954-1955
on the basis of the salaries hereinafter specified. The
salary of the County Superintendent of Schools shall not
be diminished during his term of office. The County Super-
intendent of Schools shall devote his entire time to public
school business and shall receive such compensation as the
County Board of Education shall direct, provided that no
County Superintendent of Schools appointed under the
provisions of this section or continuing in office under the
provisions of this section, shall be paid an annual salary of
less than [Five Thousand Dollars ($5,000)] Eight Thou-
sand Dollars ($8,000); [and if the county has less than
one hundred and fifty teachers in all the schools, the County
Superintendent of such county may be paid in the discretion
of the County Board of Education, an annual salary up to
and including Five Thousand Five Hundred Dollars
($5,500) ; and in any county having one hundred and fifty
teachers but less than three hundred teachers in all the
schools, the County Superintendent of such county shall in
no case be paid an annual salary of less than Five Thousand
Five Hundred Dollars ($5,500) ; and if the County Super-
intendent of such county has acted as County Superinten-
dent in the State of Maryland for a period of four years, he
shall receive an annual salary of not less than Six Thou-
sand Dollars ($6,000) ; and, if the County Superintendent
of such county has acted as County Superintendent in the
State of Maryland for a period of seven years, he shall
receive an annual salary of not less than Six Thousand
Five Hundred Dollars ($6,500) ; and in any county having
three hundred teachers or more in all the schools, the
County Superintendent of such county shall in no case be
paid an annual salary of less than Six Thousand Five
Hundred Dollars ($6,500) ; and if the County Superin-
tendent of such county has acted as County Superintendent
in the State of Maryland for a period of four years, he
shall receive an annual salary of not less than Seven Thou-
sand Dollars ($7,000) ; and, if the County Superintendent
of such county has acted as County Superintendent in the
