SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Sections 245, 246, 252 and 253 of Article 66 1/2 of the
Annotated Code of Maryland (1951 Edition), title "Motor
Vehicles", sub-title "Operation of Vehicles Upon High-
ways'', be and they are hereby repealed and re-enacted,
with amendments, to read as follows:
245. (Multiple-Beam Road Lighting Equipment.) Ex-
cept as hereinafter provided, the head-lamps, or the
auxiliary driving lamps, or combinations thereof, on motor
vehicles shall be so arranged that [the driver may select
at will] selection may be made between distributions of
light projected to different elevations, subject to the fol-
lowing requirements and limitations:
(a) There shall be an uppermost distribution of light,
or composite beam, so aimed and of such intensity as to
reveal persons and vehicles at a distance of at least [300]
350 feet ahead for all conditions of loading. [The maximum
intensity of this uppermost distribution of light or com-
posite beam 1 degree of arc or more above the horizontal
level of the lamps when the vehicle is not loaded shall not
exceed 8,000 apparent candle power, and at no other point
of the distribution of light or composite beam shall there
be an intensity of more than 75,000 apparent candlepower.]
(b) There shall be a lowermost distribution of light, or
composite beam, so aimed [that:] and of sufficient intens-
ity to reveal persons and vehicles at a distance of at least
100 feet ahead; and under any condition of loading none
of the high-intensity portion of the beam shall be directed
to strike the eyes of an approaching driver.
[(1) When the vehicle is not loaded, none of the high
intensity portion of the light which is directed to the left
of the prolongation of the extreme left side of the vehicle
shall, at a distance of 25 feet ahead, project higher than
a level of 10 inches below the level of the center of the lamp
from which it comes.
(2) When the vehicle is not loaded, none of the high
intensity portion of the light which is directed to the right
of the prolongation of the extreme left side of the vehicle
shall, at a distance of 25 feet ahead, project higher than a
level of 5 inches below the level of the center of the lamp
from which it comes.
(3) In no event shall any of the high intensity of such
lowermost distribution of light or composite beam project
higher than a level of 42 inches above the level on which
the vehicle stands at a distance of 75 feet ahead.
