having been amended by Chapter 7 of the Acts of 1939,
providing for five Town Councilmen, eliminating the pro-
vision requiring the Mayor and Councilmen to own real
ostate and relating to the powers and duties of the Coun-

cilmen, and the hours for opening and closing the polls.

ESTATE AND RELATING TO THE POWERS, DUTIES
AND COMPENSATION OF THE MAYOR AND COUN-
CILMEN, AND THE HOURS FOR OPENING AND CLOS-
ING THE POLLS.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land,
That Sections 198, 199 (j), 201, 202, 203 and 204 of
Article 24 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland (1930
Edition), title "Worcester County", sub-title "Pocomoke City",
Section 199 having been amended by Chapter 7 of the Acts
of 1939, be and they are hereby repealed and re-enacted,
with amendments, to read as follows:

198. The corporate authority, government, rights, powers
and prerogatives of the said town shall be vested in and be
exercised by one person, who shall be Mayor of said town, and
[three] five persons, who shall be Councilmen, all of whom
shall be elected as hereinafter provided, and possess the qual-
ifications hereinafter set forth; no one shall be eligible to
be elected to the office of Mayor unless on the day of the
election whereon he or she is elected he or she shall be a
qualified voter to vote at the municipal election, of said town
and is at least thirty years of age [and unless for one year
next preceding the election he or she has been and is, at the
time of the election, assessed on the tax books of said town
with, and is the owner of, real estate of the value of at least
five hundred dollars and if only a part owner then such part
interest must be of the value according to such assessment
of at least five hundred dollars; ] and no person shall be eligi-
ble to the office of Councilman unless at the date of such
election he or she shall be a qualified voter as aforesaid [and
unless for one year next preceding the election he or she has
been and is, at the time of the election, assessed on the tax
books of said town with and is the owner of real estate of the
value of at least three hundred dollars and if only a part
owner then such part interest must be of the value according
to such assessment of at least three hundred dollars, ] and
he or she must be at least twenty-five years of age; and the
term of office of Mayor shall be two years, or until his or her
successor shall be elected and qualified; and the term of
office of Councilmen shall be three years, or until their res-
pective successors shall be elected or appointed and qualified
and the present Mayor and all the present Councilmen of
