"Courts, " sub-title "Juvenile Causes, " as enacted by
Chapter 797 of the Acts of 1945, clarifying the responsi-
bility of parents who may be ordered to pay for sup-
port of a child.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 251 of Article 4 of the Code of Public Local
Laws of Maryland and Baltimore City Charter (1949 Edi-
tion), title "Courts, " sub-title "Juvenile Causes, " as en-
acted by Chapter 818 of the Acts of 1943, be and it is
hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read
as follows:

251. Whenever the State Department of Public Wel-
fare, or the Judge, under Section 249, places a child in the
custody of someone other than the child's parents or in
the custody of an agency or institution, the Judge may,
[upon application, ] after giving the parent or parents a
reasonable opportunity to be heard, order that such parent
or parents shall pay in such manner as the court may
direct, such sum as will cover in whole or in part the sup-
port of such child and if such parent or parents shall wil-
fully fail or refuse to pay such sum, the Judge may pro-
ceed against [him] such parent or parents as for contempt.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That Section 48L of
Article 26 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1947 Sup-
plement), title "Courts, " sub-title "Juvenile Causes, " as
enacted by Chapter 797 of the Acts of 1945, be and it is
hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read
as follows:

48L. Whenever the Judge, under Section 48K, places
a child in the custody of its parents, or either of them, or
in the custody of
someone other than the child's parents
or in the custody of an agency or institution, the Judge
may, after giving the parent or parents a reasonable op-
portunity to be heard, order that such parent or parents
shall pay in such manner as the court may direct, such
sum as will cover in whole or in part the support of such
child and if such parent or parents shall wilfully fail or
refuse to pay such sum, the Judge may proceed against
[him] such parent or parents as for contempt.

SEC. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall
take effect June 1, 1951.
