1839.

all such laws, regulations and ordinances, not inconsistent
with the laws and constitution of this State, as from lime
to time they may deem wise, equitable and expedient for
the comfort and health of said town and its inhabitants,
for the prevention or removal of nuisances, and suppres-
sion of vice and immorality within the limits of said town;

and shall have power to lay equal tax on all the property
as may be necessary to accomplish the purposes aforesaid,

which tax shall be collected and paid to the president and
commissioners, by the collector by them appointed, who
shall have the same power to distrain therefor as the col-
lector of the county assessment as to distrain for the same;
and that the said president and commissioners shall fix
the term of office, responsibility and compensation of such
collector.

How collected.

SEC. 11. And be it enacted, That the said commission-
ers, or a majority of them, have full power and authority,
annually to appoint a bailiff, whose duty it shall be to pre-
serve the peace and good order of said town; and for this
purpose, he is hereby invested with the same power and
authority as any constable may now have under the laws

of this State; provided, that the said bailiff, before he acts
as such, shall give bond, to the levy court of Caroline
county, as other constables now do, for the faithful per-
formance of his duty.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of

nior, Henry S. Maddox, Thomas E. Ballard, Daniel Miles,
Edmund T. Hall, William H. Hall, John Waters, Levin
Colbert, William H. Maddox, Tribman White, Littleton
Dorsey, Charles Ford, Lazarus Maddox, Littleton John-
son, Samuel Miles, Senior, Robert H. Jones, Benjamin
K. Green, Francis Hall, Kiah Blake, Samuel Hall, Richard
H. Hall, Richardson Dize, Peter Evans, Thomas Hall,
Revell Parks, Sancley Landan, Henry R. Dorsey, James
H. Ford, Richard Landan, Daniel Foard, Samuel Hall, Lit-
tleton D. Mattox, James W. Hall, Edward Parks, or
