NOVEMBER. LAWS OF MARYLAND.

CHAP.
LII.

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the marriage of Thomas Taylor,
and Phoebe Taylor his wife, heretofore solemnized, be, and the same is hereby declared to be, abso-
lutely and to all intents and purposes null and void, and the said Thomas Taylor, and Phoebe his
wife, are hereby declared to be divorced a vinculo matrimonii; provided always, that nothing in this
act contained shall be construed to illegitimate the children of the said Thomas Taylor, and Phoebe
Taylor his wile, born prior to the passage of this act.

CHAP. LIII.

Passed Decem-
ber 23, 1810.

An ACT for the benefit of Doctor James Archer, of Claiborne
County,, in the Territory of Mississippi.

WHEREAS doctor James Archer hath represented, by his petition to this general assembly,
that he is desirous of removing to this state to reside therein, and that being possessed of
several slaves he is fearful that by bringing them with him to reside in the state of Maryland the
would become entitled to their freedom, and hath prayed that a law may pass for his relief in the
premises; therefore,

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General. Assembly of Maryland, That the said James Archer be and he
is hereby authorised and empowered to remove, import and bring into this state, at any time within
one year after the passage of this act, such slave or slaves as he may now have a bona fide absolute
right unto, and which he removed with him from this state to the Mississippi territory, together
with their increase, and none others, and the same to retain as slaves.

III. AND BE IT ENACTED, That nothing herein contained shall be construed to enable the said
doctor James Archer to sell or dispose of any slave or slaves, imported by virtue of this act, or
their increase, until the said slave or slaves shall have resided within this state three whole years
next preceding such sale, except in cases of disposition by last will and testament, and dispositions
by law for bonafide debts, or consequent upon intestacy.

CHAP. LIV.

Passed Decem-
ber 23, 1810.

A Further Supplement to an Act, entitled. An Act for the valuation of
Real and Personal Property within this State.

BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That from and after the passage of this act,
the commissioners of the tax for Allegany county shall cause to be entered on their books, all
the lots, or parts of lots, of land, westward of Fort Cumberland, which may come within their
knowledge, that have been, or hereafter may be, in any manner transferred by any officer or sol-
dier, or where the right of any officer or soldier to any such lots, or parts of lots aforesaid, have
been, or hereafter shall or may be, transferred by any sale under any law or laws of the United
States, or of this state, and when so entered as aforesaid, and charged in the names of the pur-
chaser or purchasers of said lots, or parts of lots aforesaid, at any such sale or sales, the same shall
be subject to, and liable for, the county taxes, as other lands are in Allegany county, any law to
the contrary notwithstanding.

II. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the commissioners of the tax for Allegany county be and they
are hereby authorised and empowered, to procure from the marshall of the district of Maryland a
list of lands, lots, and parts of lots, sold for the direct tax, and the purchaser or purchasers thereof,
the expense of which to be levied on Allegany county as other county charges.

CHAP. LV.

Passed Decem-
ber 23, 1810

An ACT for founding an Academy at Hagars-Town, in Washington
County.

BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That in order to the erecting and building a
house and other conveniencies, for an academy in Washington county, the persons herein after
named shall have full power to purchase one or more acres of land in or adjoining Hagar's town, in
Washington county, to wit: Richard Pindell, John T. Mason, Samuel Ringgold, Samuel Hughes,
junior, Charles Carroll, Upton Lawrence, Frisby Tilghman, Otho H. Williams, Moses Tabbs,
William Keyser, John Kennedy, John Harry, Jacob Zellar, Christian Hager, John I. Stull, Jacob
Schnebly, Thomas B. Hall, John Ragan, senior, Matthias Shaffner, Alexander Neill and Frederick
Dorsey, who shall be and they are hereby appointed trustees, to act as such until the first Tuesday
in October next, and until a new election of trustees agreeable to the future provisions of this act;
