NOVEMBER. LAWS OF MARYLAND..

CHAP. XVI.

Passed 15th of
January, 1808.

An ACT authorising a lottery to raise a sum of money for the pur-
pose of building a bridge across the river Monocacy, in Frederick
county.

Preamble.

WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, by the petition of sundry inhabitants of
Frederick county, chat they have experienced great and manifold delays and inconveniencies
in conveying to the city of Baltimore the produce of their farms, by reason of their being unable to
cross, at certain seasons, the river Monocacy, between Creager's-town and Woodsborough, on the
main 'road leading from Washington county, through these towns and Liberty-town, to Baltimore,
and praying that a law may pass authorising a lottery to raise a sum of money for the purpose of
building a bridge across said river; therefore,

A scheme may
be proposed,

&c.

H. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That it shall and may be lawful, for Ben-
jamin Blackford, Michael Myers, Frederick C. Hass, Bernard Gilbert, Abraham Crapster, Conrad
Shafer, Elie Philips and Frederick Eichelberger, or a majority of them, to propose a scheme of a
lottery for raising a sum of money, not exceeding five thousand dollars, and sell and dispose of the
tickets in said lottery, and they are hereby authorised to draw said lottery; provided, that the said
Benjamin Blackford, Michael Myers, Frederick C. Hats, Bernard Gilbert, Abraham Crapster, Con-
rad Shafer, Elie Philips and Frederick Eichelberger, or such majority of them as shall undertake to
act under this law, shall, before the sale or disposal of any ticket or tickets in said lottery, give
their bond to the state of Maryland, in the penalty of twenty thousand dollars, conditioned, that
they will well and truly apply so much money arising therefrom, within twelve months after the draw-
ing of said lottery shall commence, as will satisfy the fortunate adventurers for prizes drawn by them,
and after deducting the necessary expenses incurred in said lottery, shall, within two years from the
time the drawing said lottery shall commence, apply the money raised by. said lottery for the purpose
of building the bridge aforesaid.

Bond to be
lodged, &c.

III. AND BE IT ENACTED, That it shall be the duty of the said commissioners, or a majority of
them, before they act as such, to lodge the bond made, and entered into as aforesaid, in the office of
the clerk of Frederick county court, there to be recorded, and upon such bond, or any office copy
thereof, suit or suits may be instituted against the obligors therein mentioned, or any of them, or
their legal representatives, for any breach or non-compliance with the condition, of the same,

CHAP. XVII.

Passed 15th of
January, 1808.

An ACT authorising a lottery to raise a sum of money for the pur-
pose of finishing the steeple of Saint-John's church in Elizabeth-
town, in Washington county, and for other purposes.

Preamble.

WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, by the petition of sundry inhabitants of
Washington county, that, they commenced building a church in Elizabeth-town, in Washing-
ton county aforesaid, and that they have finished the said church, except a part of the steeple, but
in going thus far with it they have contracted a debt which, with the sum necessary for finishing the
said steeple, will amount to two thousand dollars, and praying that a law may pass authorising a lot-
tery to raise a sum of money for the purpose aforesaid; and the prayer thereof appearing reasonable,
therefore,

A scheme may
be proposed,
&c.

II. BE IT EXACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That it shall and may be lawful for George
Nigh, Jacob Young, George Schenk, Frederick Otter, Peter Miller, (hatter, ) Anthony Hower and
John Kausler, or a majority of them, to propose a scheme or schemes of a lottery for raising a sum
of money, not exceeding two thousand dollars, and sell and dispose of the tickets in said lottery, and
they are hereby authorised to draw said lottery; provided, that the said George Nigh, Jacob Young,
George Schenk, Frederick Alter, Peter Miller, (hatter, ) Anthony Hower and John Kausler, or such
majority of them as shall undertake to act under this law, shall, before the sale or disposal of any
ticket or tickets in said lottery, give their bond to the state of Maryland, in the penalty of eight
thousand dollars, conditioned, that they will well and truly apply so much money arising therefrom,
within six months after the drawing of said lottery, as will satisfy the fortunate adventurers for prizes
drawn by them, and after deducting the necessary expenses incurred in said lottery, shall, within
one year from the time of the drawing of said lottery, apply the money, raised by such lottery, for
the purposes aforesaid.
