IV. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the commissioners respectively herein before named shall be
entitled to receive two dollars for every day they shall severally attend to discharge the duties re-
quired by this act, which is hereby directed to be levied, collected and paid, as other county charges
are levied, collected and paid.

CHAP.
CXII.

Commissioners
allowance.

V. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said commissioners, or a majority of them, shall value and
ascertain the damages that may be sustained by each and every of the persons through or on whose
lands the said road may pass, by opening the same, and the damages so ascertained shall be levied
and assessed as other county charges are, and shall be paid over to the said persons respectively over
whose lands said road may pass.

A Further supplement to the act, entitled, An act for the regulation
and improvement of Denton, in Caroline county.

Passed 20th of
January, 1808.

WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, by the petition of sundry inhabitants of the
village of Denton, in Caroline county, that the several acts of assembly passed for the afore-
said purpose are found insufficient to carry into effect the objects thereby contemplated; therefore,

Preamble.

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the commissioners of the village of
Denton, or a majority of them, shall meet together at the court-house in Denton, or at such other
public place within the limits of said village as shall be previously notified for that purpose, on the
first Monday in April next ensuing, and on the first Monday in every third month thereafter, and
as much oftener by adjournments as they shall judge to be necessary, and when so assembled, they,
or a majority of them, shall proceed to execute the several powers and authorities vested in them
by virtue of this act, from time to time, as occasion may require.

Commissioners

III. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said commissioners, or a majority of them, and their suc-
cessors, shall have full power and authority to make such by laws tor the regulation and good go-
vernment of the said village and the inhabitants thereof, and to restrain all disorders and distur-
bances, and to prevent all nuisances, inconveniencies and annoyances, within the said village, as from
time to time may be necessary and consonant to reason, and not contrary to the constitution and
laws of this state; and the said by-laws shall be observed, kept and performed, by all the inhabi-
tants of the said village, under such reasonable penalties, fines and forfeitures, as shall be imposed
by such by-laws, not exceeding eight dollars in any one case.

IV. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said commissioners shall cause a just and fair assessment and
valuation of all the real property within the limits of the said village to be made and returned, be-
tween the first day of April and the first day of May annually, by some person to be appointed by
them, who shall be qualified and bound to make return thereof agreeably to the supplement to the
law for the regulation of Denton, passed at November session, eighteen hundred and four; provided,
that the tax so laid shall in no case exceed the sum of one dollar in the hundred pound in any one year.

V. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said commissioners, or a majority of them, or their successors,
shall have full power and authority to assess and levy, upon every person or persons keeping for
common use a billiard-table within the said village, or within one mile thereof, an annual tax of eight
dollars current money for every billiard-table so kept and used, and likewise to assess and levy an
annual tax of three shillings and nine-pence like money on every dog, and seven shillings and six-
pence like money on every bitch, belonging to any inhabitant of said village, and the said commissi-
oners may direct the killing of any dog or bitch in said village whose owner cannot be ascertained.

VI. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said commissioners shall, on the first Monday of April,
(or as soon thereafter as is convenient, ) and annually every year thereafter, appoint an active dis-
creet person to be bailiff and constable of said village, who, before he shall proceed t: o the executi-
on of his office, shall take an oath, or affirmation, (as the case may be, ) to be administered by any
justice of the peace for Caroline county, that he will faithfully and impartially perform the duties
required of him, as bailiff and constable within the limits of said village, by virtue of this act, with-
out favour, affection or partiality, according to the best of his skill and judgment; and the said bai-
liff or constable shall give bond, in the same manner, and under the same penalties, that the several
constables of said county do; and it shall be the duty of said bailiff or constable to attend the meet-
ings of the said commissioners whenever he shall be required, to perform such services as shall from
lime to time be by them directed, for the more effectual accomplishing the objects of this act; to
