Without his, her or their consent; and provided also, that the said commissioners shall not proceed
to open and clear said road before the damages, if any, be paid, or secured to be paid, to the person
or persons in whose favour such damages may be adjudged.

CHAP.
CLXI.
|
III. AND BE IT ENACTED, That if any person or persons through whose land the said road shall
pass, or his, her or their guardian or trustee, shall conceive himself, herself or themselves, ag-
grieved by such valuation and assessment of damages by the said commissioners, it shall and may be
lawful for any justice of the peace, on his, her or their application, to issue his warrant, under his
hand and seal, directed to the sheriff of the county, commanding him to summon twelve disinterest-
ed men, qualified by law to serve as jurors in the county court, to meet upon the premises on a cer-
tain day, of which ten days notice at least shall be given to the party or parties interested, and the
said jurors, when so met, and having each first taken an oath before some justice of the pence, that
he will, without favour, affection, partiality or prejudice, assess the damages sustained by the per-
son or persons at whose request such inquisition shall be taken, by reason of opening the aforesaid
road through his, her or their land, shall thereupon proceed to assess and value the damages accord-
ingly, taking into consideration the advantages and disadvantages, if any, and such inquisition and
valuation shall be final and conclusive.

An ACT to pay the civil list, and other expenses of civil government.
WHEREAS those who dedicate their time, abilities and labour, to the public, ought to receive
a reasonable and adequate compensation for their services;

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the following officers of civil go-
vernment, lor the time being, shall be entitled to receive at the rate of the following salaries in
current money, for the ensuing year, to wit: The treasurer of the western shore, two thousand
dollars; the treasurer of the eastern shore, four hundred and fifty dollars; the auditor, eight hun-
dred dollars; the clerk of the council, eight hundred dollars; the clerk of the senate, one hundred
and fifty dollars; the clerk of the house of delegates, three hundred dollars; the printer to the
state, twelve hundred dollars; the messenger to the council, two hundred and fifty dollars.

III. AND BE IT ENACTED, That all monies which shall remain in the treasury, after discharging
the journal of accounts, and all unappropriated money which may come into the treasury, be first
applied to the payment of the civil list for the ensuing year.

A Further supplement to the act, entitled, An ad authorising Tho-
mas Bailey, late sheriff and collector of Baltimore county, to com-
plete his collection, and for other purposes.

WHEREAS by the act to which this is a supplement, Thomas Bailey, late sheriff of Baltimore
county, is authorised and empowered, until the first day of January, eighteen hundred and
eight, in as full and ample manner as he could have done during the time limitted by law, to col-
lect all balances due him, as sheriff and collector of Baltimore county for the year eighteen hundred
and five; and it being represented to this general assembly, that the said law was intended to provide
for the collection of balances due, and to have been collected in the year eighteen hundred and six,
and from the multiplicity of business of the said sheriff and collector, he was unable to complete his
said collection within the period aforesaid, and that an extension of the said time is necessary to the
completion of the same; therefore,

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the said Thomas Bailey be and he
is hereby authorised and empowered, until the first day of January, in the year eighteen hundred
and nine, to collect all balances due him as sheriff and collector of Baltimore county for the year
eighteen hundred and six, in the same manner, and upon the same terms and conditions, thai he
might have collected the same before the first day of January, eighteen hundred and eight.
