RESOLUTIONS.

most convenient highway to market, for the various pro-
ducts of the interiem of that State, will annually bear down
to the town of Havre-de-Grace, as its outlet port, immense
quantities of iron, wheat, corn, coal and lumber. And
whereas these advantages of position, are in a great mea-
sure counterbalanced, by certain obstructions to the naviga-
tion of the Susquehanna a short distance below Havre-de-
Grace, in the form of sand bars across the channel of the
river; by which vessels drawing more than eight feet wa-
ter, are unable at low tide to enter said port. And where-
as upon an application from this General Assembly, an
appropriation was heretofore made by Congress, for the
purpose of a survey of the head waters of the Chesapeake,
and under said appropriation a survey was made, of the
harbor of Havre-de-Grace, in the year eighteen hundred
and thirty-six, by G. W. Hughes, Esq. United States Civil
Engineer, and reported to Congress, at the session of that
year; and whereas it was stated in said report, that the
obstructions to the navigation herein mentioned, might be
removed so far as to admit the passage at extreme low tide,
of vessels drawing ten feet water, at a cost of fifty-eight
thousand dollars, and to admit vessels drawing twelve feet
water, at a cost of seventy-two thousand dollars; and the
propriety of an appropriation from Congress to remove
said obstruction, was respectfully suggested. Therefore,
Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
our Senators and Representatives in Congress, be requested
to use their exertions to obtain the passage of a law by
Congress, making the necessary appropriation to remove
certain sand bars at the mouth of the Susquehanna river,
obstructing the passage of vessels of large burden to the
port of Havre-de-Grace.
Resolved, That his Excellency the Governor, be respect-
fully requested to forward a copy of these resolutions and
preamble, to our Senators in Congress, and to our Repre-
sentatives hereafter elected.

Resolution in favor of J. C. Legrand, J. S. Owens and J.
H. T. Magruder.

Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
the Treasurer of the Western Shore, pay to J. C. Legrand,
J. S. Owens and J. H. T. Magruder, the sum of one hun-
dred and fifty dollars, for services rendered per resolution
number one, of December session eighteen hundred and
forty-two.
