An act entitled an act for the relief of Loch L. Weems.
Whereas one hundred and thirty citizens of Calvert
county by their petition represented to this legislature that
on or about the last of July eighteen hundred and forty-two,
a certain negro called Sam, the slave of Loch L. Weems in-
flicted a blow upon the head of a certain Alfred Miller, a
citizen of the county aforesaid from which he died; and
whereas, the said negro Sam was legally apprehended and
placed in the jail of said county and because of the insecurity
of the same, the said negro has made his escape, and the
said Loch L. Weems having sustained considerable loss
thereby, the said citizens have therefore prayed the legis-
lature to pass a law authorising the levy court of the
county aforesaid, to levy upon the assessable property
therein such sum as they in their judgment shall deem suf-
ficient, to compensate the said Loch L. Weems for his

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the levy court of Calvert county, be, and they are
hereby authorised and required to levy upon the assessa-
ble property of Calvert county, such sum as they in their
judgment shall deem sufficient to compensate Loch L.
