drawn, under direction of the commissioners of lotteries,
in the manner persued by them, in relation to the State's
schemes, and this obligation on the part of the state, still
exists, notwithstanding an end has been put to the lottery
system, so far as regards herself; and whereas by the laws
now in force, the licenses to sell tickets in the consolidated
lotteries, are grantable by the clerks of the counties, and
Baltimore city court, and the advantage to be derived from
their issue, by the commissioners of lotteries, under the act
of eighteen hundred and thirty-one, is lost to the consol-
idated lotteries, the termination of which, is thereby pro-
tracted; and whereas it is desirable, as well for the reason
just mentioned, as for the augmentation of the states revenue,
from this source, that the said licenses, shall be issued as
hath been the case, for the last ten years, by the commis-
sioners of lotteries.

CHAP. 50.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That from and after the passage of this act, it
shall not be lawful for any clerk of a court, to issue any
licenses, to sell tickets in this state.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That from and after the passage
of this act, it shall be lawful for the commissioners of lot-
teries, to issue to the person, or persons, who may contract
to draw the consolidated lotteries, such number of licenses,
not less than forty, at the rate of two hundred and fifty
dollars each, for use of the state, as said contractors may
agree to take said licenses, to authorise the sale of tickets,
or parts of tickets, only in the consolidated lotteries, and to
be assignable in writing, with the previous consent of the
commissioners of lotteries.

SEC. 3. And it is further enacted, That the contract-
ors for the consolidated lotteries, for the current year, upon
surrendering to the lottery commissioners, the license under
which they, and their agents now act, shall be credited with
the amount, part therefor, in settling for any licenses which
may be issued to them, for the same year, under the pro-
visions of this act.
