is too large for the practical use of voting machines, the said
Boards of Supervisors shall supply paper ballots in the usual
form for use in voting for such excess offices and questions as
they shall deem advisable.

(b) In all elections in Harford County, the use of voting
machines in every polling place shall be mandatory. The
County Commissioners shall provide the necessary funds and
shall appoint a custodian of voting machines and a deputy
custodian, whose duty it shall be to prepare the machines for
use. The custodian and deputy custodian shall be chosen
respectively from each of the two leading political parties.
Their compensation shall be fixed by the Board of Election
Supervisors. This sub-section is not intended to limit in any
way the powers conferred by sub-section (a).

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect June 1, 1949.

CHAPTER 735

(House Bill 488)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section
261 of Article 14 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Mary-
land (1930 Edition), title "Howard County", sub-title
"Roads", as said section was amended by Chapter 374 of
the Acts of 1943, and Chapter 881 of the Acts of 1945, re-
lating to the compensation of the County Road Superin-
tendent of Howard County.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted 'by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 261 of Article 14 of the Code of Public
Local Laws of Maryland (1930 Edition), title "Howard
County", sub-title "Roads", as said section was amended by
Chapter 374 of the Acts of 1943, and Chapter 881 of the Acts
of 1945, be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with
amendments, to read as follows:

261. The County Commissioners of Howard County on or
before the first day of May, in the year nineteen hundred and
fourteen and every second year thereafter, shall appoint some
competent person as County Road Superintendent, for the
term of two years, who shall have had at least two years'
practical experience in constructing, building, maintaining
