LAWS OF MARYLAND.

CHAP. 359.

Turnpike Company, and by the same name shall
have succession during the continuance of this
corporation, and the said stockholders and their
successors, by the name aforesaid, shall sue and
be sued, answer and be answered in any court of
law and equity in this State, may have and use a
common seal, which they may alter, change or
amend at pleasure.

Instalments.

SEC. 8. And be it enacted, That the sums sub-
scribed to the stock of said company shall be paid
to the president and directors of said company in
such manner and in such instalments and at such
times as the president and directors may direct
and appoint, they giving at least one month notice
in all the newspapers published in Baltimore coun-
ty of the payments required.

Subscriptions.

SEC. 9. And be it enacted, That after the presi-
dent and directors are elected in the manner here-
inbefore mentioned, they shall have full power
and authority to receive subscription for all si\b-
scribed stock or vacant shares, and after the said
election, the power hereinbefore vested in the com-
missioners for receiving subscriptions shall cease;

Proviso.

Provided, nevertheless, that when either the capi-
tal stock or a sum sufficient for the comple-
tion of said road is subscribed for, no further sub-
scriptions shall be received.

Road, toll-
gates, tolls,
&c.

SEC. 10. And be it enacted, That the said com-
pany shall cause to be made upon the bed of said
Turnpike road an artificial road of stone, gravel,
wood or some other hard substance, the bed of
which shall be at least sixteen feet wide, and shall
forever hereafter during the continuance of said
corporation maintain and keep the same in good
order and repair and cause bridges or culverts to
be erected over the water crossing said road com-
mencing at either end thereof, and when three
miles of said road shall have been completed in
the manner aforesaid, it shall and may be lawful
for said company to erect a toll gate thereon and
charge and receive such tolls as are now charged
and received by the Baltimore and Harford Turn-
pike Company.

Examiners
appointed by
the Governor.

SEC. 11. And be enacted, That as soon as the
president and directors of said company shall have
perfected the said road for a distance of three miles
and so on from time to time any other like distance
