JOINT RESOLUTIONS

NO. 1

(Senate Joint Resolution No. 1)

Joint Resolution directing the State Roads Commission of
Maryland to make the same type of study and report
in connection with the proposed construction of a bridge
from or near Benedict in Charles County across the
Patuxent River to Calvert County, which was made on the
Susquehanna and Potomac River bridges and which is now
being made on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, by competent
engineers to determine the estimated cost of the bridge, the
estimated number of vehicles which would use the bridge
and the estimated amount toll revenue which could be
produced therefrom.

WHEREAS, the Patuxent River divides Prince George's
County, Charles and St. Mary's Counties from Anne Arundel
and Calvert County, and

WHEREAS, for a distance of over sixty (60) miles from the
mouth of the Patuxent River to Marlboro in Prince George's
County there are no transportation facilities available across
this river with the exception of a barge capable of carrying
two (2) motor vehicles, running only during daylight hours
between Benedict in Charles County to a point opposite in
Calvert County, and

WHEREAS, this inadequate facility has resulted in the iso-
lation of the peoples of these three Southern Maryland
counties, and

WHEREAS, all of the people of the five Southern Maryland
Counties are desirous of having this transportation handicap
eliminated by the construction of a bridge from Benedict in
Charles County to a point across the Patuxent River in Cal-
vert County, a distance of about three-quarters of a mile, and

WHEREAS, the State hag spent millions of dollars, and
properly so, in building bridges on the Eastern Shore and in
Western and Central Maryland for the benefit of its citizens
living in those parts of the State, and

WHEREAS, the State Legislature has authorized and ap-
propriated vast sums of money t6 rehabilitate the roads and
bridges throughout the State, and
