CHAPTER 2.
(Senate Bill 107)
AN ACT to add a new section to Article 40 of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1939 Edition), title "General Assembly",
said new section to be known as Section 1A and to follow
immediately after Section 1 of said Article, relating to the
payment of the salaries of the members of the General
Assembly.
WHEREAS, Section 15 of Article 3 of the Constitution has
been amended to provide an annual compensation of One Thou-
sand Dollars ($1, 000. 00) for each member of the General As-
sembly, the said compensation to be payable quarterly; and
WHEREAS, It is desirable to prescribe the procedure for the
payment of said compensation; therefore
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land,, That a new section be and it is hereby added to Article
40 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1939 Edition), title
"General Assembly", said new section to be known as Section
1A, to follow immediately after Section 1 of said Article, and
to read as follows:
1A. The State Comptroller is hereby authorized and directed
to pay to each member of the General Assembly, in accordance
with the provisions of Section 15 of Article 3 of the Constitu-
tion of Maryland, on the first day of January, April, July and
October each year, beginning with January, 1943, the sum of
Two Hundred and Fifty Dollars ($250. 00) each, except that
the presiding officer of each House shall be paid the sum of
Three Hundred and Twelve Dollars and Fifty Cents ($312. 50)
on each of said days, provided, however, that the first quarterly
payment to any newly elected or appointed member or to any
re-elected member of the General Assembly shall be made only
after such newly elected, appointed or re-elected member has
qualified and taken the oath of office.
The presiding officer of each House shall file with the State
Comptroller a certified list of the members of the respective
Houses who have been elected and qualified, which certificate
shall be the authority to said Comptroller to make the above
specified payments. Where any deductions are to be made
for unexcused absences from any session of the General Assem-
bly, such deductions shall be made from the next succeeding
payment or payments. In case of a vacancy in the membership
of either House of the General Assembly, the presiding officer
