teriors are illuminated, shall display lighted lamps at the
times mentioned in Section 213 when and as required in this
section, except that such lamps may be but are not required to
be lighted when any such vehicle is upon a highway which is
sufficiently illuminated by street lamps to render any person
or vehicle visible at a distance of 300 feet.

(b) Clearance Lamps. Every vehicle having a width at any
part in excess of 80 inches shall be equipped with two clear-
ance lamps located at the front and rear of such vehicle,
two located at the front and displaying an amber light visible
from a distance of 300 feet to the front of the vehicle and
two located at the rear of the vehicle and displaying a red
light visible from a distance of 300 feet to the rear of the ve-
hicle, which said rear clearance lamps shall be in addition to
the red rear lamp hereinbefore required, provided, however,
that vehicles equipped with acetylene headlamps may be
equipped, in lieu of such clearance lights, with an amber re-
flector in front and a red reflector in the rear, which shall be
so designed and maintained to meet the requirements as to
reflectors of this Article.

(e) Side-marker Lamps. Every vehicle or combination of
such vehicles which exceeds 20 feet in overall length shall be
equipped with at least 4 side marker lamps, 1 on each side near
the front and 1 on each side near the rear. Said lamps shall
display amber lights on each side near the front and red
lights on each side near the rear, each one of the said four
lights to be visable from a distance of 300 feet to the side of
the vehicle on which it is located. In lieu of such side marker
lamps any such vehicle may be equipped with four reflectors,
one on each side near the front and one on each side near the
rear. Two reflectors nearest the front shall be amber reflectors
and the two reflectors nearest the rear shall be red reflectors,
provided such marker lamps otherwise meet the requirements
of this Article.

(d) Side-marker Lamps May Be Combined With Clearance
Lamps. Side-marker lamps may be in combination with
clearance lamps and may use the same light source.

217. LAMP OR FLAG ON PROJECTING LOAD. Whenever the
load upon any vehicle extends to the rear 4 feet or more be-
yond the bed or body of such vehicle there shall be dis-
played at the extreme rear end of the load, at the times speci-
fied in Section 213 hereof, a red light or lantern plainly visible
from a distance of at least 300 feet to the sides and rear. The
red light or lantern required under this section shall be in
addition to the red rear light required upon every vehicle. At
