not given to the debtor, and acting without knowledge of
such assignment the debtor pays or discharges in whole or
in part the obligation to the original owner or a subsequent
assignee of the owner of the same, in good faith, such pay-
ment shall be sufficient acquittance to the debtor in whole
or pro tanto, as the case may be.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall
take effect June 1, 1943.

CHAPTER 729.
(Senate Bill 414)

AN ACT to add a new sub-section to Section 99 of Article
77 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1939 Edition),
title "Public Education", sub-title "Teachers' Retirement
System", sub-heading " (Benefits) Service Retirement
Benefit", said new sub-section to be known as sub-section
(e) and to follow immediately after sub-section (b) of
said Section providing for the retention or reinstatement
in service during the present war of certain members of
the Teachers' Retirement System over seventy (70) years
of age.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That a new sub-section be and it is hereby added
to Section 99 of Article 77 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1989 Edition), title "Public Education", sub-title
Teachers' Retirement System', sub-heading "(Benefits)
Service Retirement Benefit", said new sub-section to be
known as sub-section (e), to follow immediately after sub-
section (b) of said Section and to read as follows:

(e) Any member in service who attains the age of seventy
(70) during the present war and any retired member who
was in service on January 1, 1942 may remain or be rein-
stated in service after attaining such age if, in the opinion
of the official or body originally appointing such member,
he is capable of performing the duties of his position and if
such official or body appointing such member gives notice
in writing to the Board of Trustees of intention to retain
or reinstate such person in service, but the service of such
person shall continue only during the present war. and for
a period of six months thereafter or to any earlier time at
