and the Mayor to receive not in excess of ten dollars for each
regular meeting attended, and in no case for more than two
meetings per month and the Mayor shall receive the fees
hereinafter allowed; provided, however, that the compensation
of the Mayor and the members of the Council shall be fixed
by the Mayor and Town Council under this provision at any
regular meeting, based upon available funds as determined
by the Mayor and Town Council under the prevailing tax
rate; and provided, further, That the Mayor and the members
of the Council, or any of them, may be reimbursed or paid for
any expenses incurred or losses sustained by them while per-
forming his or their official duties on behalf of the town.
The Mayor and Town Council, in their discretion, may fix
such compensation for the Treasurer as they may deem just
and necessary.
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall not
become effective unless at the next regular town election there
shall be cast a majority of votes in favor of the amendment to
the town charter as provided in this Act, and that at said elec-
tion the question of the approval or disapproval of the provi-
sions of this Act shall be submitted to the qualified voters of
the said town of Brentwood, as follows, namely: That on the
ballots provided by the Mayor and Town Council of Brentwood
at said election there shall be printed the words: "For charter
amendment providing compensation for the Mayor and Coun-
cilmen" and "Against charter amendment providing compen-
sation for the Mayor and Councilmen, " with a square after
said words, in each case, for the (X) mark of the voter, and
the voter may vote thereon by an (X) mark after his choice,
and if there be a majority of votes cast in favor of the amended
charter, then this Act and the provisions thereof shall go into
effect immediately; and if there be a majority of votes cast
against the amended charter, then this Act shall be null and
void, except as hereinafter provided.
In the event that a majority of votes cast at the regular
election as provided for in this Act shall be against the charter
amendment, then the Mayor and Town Council of Brentwood
shall submit the amendment herein proposed in the same man-
ner and under the authority of this Act at the next regular
town election in June, 1932, in the same manner and method
. as hereinbefore provided.
