CHIEF OF POLICE.

108.      The Mayor shall appoint one person, subject to con-
firmation by a majority of the Council, to be Chief of Police
and such number of policemen in addition as is deemed neces-
sary. He shall hold office for two years or until his successor
is appointed and qualified. His duties and compensation shall
be such as are prescribed by law or by ordinance of the Mayor
and Council from time to time. It shall be his duty to enforce
all ordinances of the Mayor and Council of Chestertown..
Before entering upon the duties of his office he shall take oath
before the Mayor to perform well and faithfully, without
partiality and prejudice, the duties of his office in all things-
according to the laws of the State and the ordinances of the
Mayor and Council of Chestertown and to enforce said ordi-
nances to the best of his ability. This oath shall be certified
by the Mayor and filed with the Clerk of Chestertown.

109.     The Chief of Police and all subordinate officers shall,
in time of fire, maintain order and direct traffic in the fire
zone subject to the rules and regulations of the Mayor and
Council.

All policemen may be suspended without pay for a period
not exceeding thirty (30) days or reprimanded by the Mayor
for neglect, non-performance of duty or other good cause, and
shall be subject to removal as hereinafter provided.

110.     Upon complaint in writing and a trial before the
Mayor and Council of Chestertown, after notice. informing him
of what he is charged and to appear and defend himself first
having been given him in writing at least five days before
trial, if the Mayor and Council find any of the officers of said
town to be guilty of conduct unbecoming an officer, wilful
disobedience, neglect of duty, misfeasance or malfeasance in
office, such officer may be removed at once from his office by a
majority vote of the Mayor and Council of Chestertown, and
his office shall be declared vacant. The Mayor shall as soon as
convenient thereafter appoint another person to fill the office
thus vacated for the unexpired term, which appointment shall
be submitted to the Council for confirmation, and when con-
firmed the new officer or employee shall qualify in the manner
as heretofore provided, and the new officer or employee shall
have the same powers and duties as if he had been appointed in
the first place, and shall serve out the term of the removed
officer or employee.
