CIVIL OFFICERS. 77

The chief judge of each judicial district, according to
law, is also a judge of the court of appeals, the sessions
of which are held alternately, on the Eastern and
Western shores twice each year, viz:

For the Western Shore—at Annapolis, on the second
Monday of June, and first Monday of December.

For the Eastern Shore—at Easton, on the first Mon-
day in June, and first Monday in November.

JUDICIAL DISTRICTS.

The State is divided into six Judicial Districts.

The 1st district comprehends St. Mary's Charles
and Prince George's counties.
2d. Cecil, Kent, Queen Ann's, and Talbot.
3d. Anne Arundel, Montgomery, and Calvert.
4th. Caroline, Dorchester, Somerset and Worcester.
5th. Frederick, Washington and Allegany.
6th. Baltimore and Harford.

There are no district courts, properly so termed, un-
der the state authorities One chief judge and two asso-
ciate judges are appointed for each judicial district,who
are required to hold two courts annually, in each of
the counties included within their district

The salary of the chief judge is $2200, and that of
each associate judge $1400, which, according to the
constitution cannot be diminished during life. They
receive their appointment from the executive, and
hold them during good behavior.
