cil, appoints, all the civil and military officers of
the state.
Compensation, 1000 ($2666 66) per an-
num. A dwelling house with furniture, fur-
nished for his accommodation, whilst acting.
EXECUTIVE COUNCIL.
Five members are chosen annually by joint
ballot of both branches of the legislature, to act
as council to the governor. The council fill up
vacancies in their own body, and appoint their
own clerk. The first named,or person having the
highest number of votes, is president of the
council, and in case of the death, resignation or
removal of the governor, he acts as governor
until a new election takes place. The govern-
or nominates for all civil and military appoint-
ments, which are made by and with the advice
of the council. Their salary is voted annually
by the legislature, and has generally been about
five hundred dollars per annum, to each mem-
ber.
The following is a List of the Members of the
Executive Council, since the adoption of the
Constitution.
Charles Carroll, of Carrollton—refused.
Josiah Polk, chosen February 14th and No-
vember 1777.
John Rogers, February 14th—1777
Edward Lloyd, February 1777 to 1779.
