committees chosen in the several counties for
that particular purpose.
The committee met at Annapolis, on the
22d June, 1774, and continued by adjourn-
ment from day to day, until the 15th of the
same month, Mathew Tilghman, Esq. in the
chair, and John Ducket, clerk.
Resolved, That ROBERT GOLDSBOROUGH,
THOMAS JOHNSON, WILLIAM PACA, SAMUEL
CHASE, MATHEW TILGHMAN, Esq. or any two
or more of them, be deputies for this province,
to attend a general congress of deputies from
the colonies, at such time and place as maybe
agreed on, to effect one general plan of con-
duct, operating on the commercial connection
of the colonies with the country, for the relief
of Boston, and preservation of American liber-
ty,"
Such were the credentials of the deputation—
from Maryland.
The committee of correspondence selected
Philadelphia for the place, and the beginning of
September, for the time of the meeting of this
important council. On the fourth of that month,
1774, the session commenced. Their delibe-
ration closed on the 26th of October, after pro-
posing that another congress should meet on
the succeeding 10th of May.
The principles avowed, the arguments used
and measues adopted by this congress, have
procured for them, the deserved appallation of
