The increase of the whites during these thir-
ty years, was 52,673

Of slaves, 4,362.
Of free blacks, 31,687

Total increase, 97,722

which is a fraction over thirty per cent, for the

period, or one percent per annum.
The last census exhibits a favorable change
during the ten years preceding, in regard to the
increase of white population, as well as diminu-
tion of slavery in the state. The increase of
free blacks arises in a great proportion from
emancipation.
