142 MARYLAND.

1610—Henry Hudson an Englishman in the
service of the Dutch, discovers the Hudson
river. Immediately that people fitted out
some ships to trade with the natives.

1614—The first permanent settlement made
by the Dutch on Manhattan Island. They
called the state New Netherlands, which
name it retained until the English captured
it in 1664, and changed its name to New
York.

Settlements commenced in New Jersey
by the Dutch.

The northern colonies take the name of
New England.

1615. Tobacco first cultivated in Virginia.

1619. One hundred maids arrive in Virginia
as wives for the colonists. They were sold
at from one hundred to one hundred and
fifty pounds of tobacco each.

1620. Plymouth in Massachusetts settled by
part of Mr. Robinsons congregation.

1621. Slaves first imported into America by
Dutch traders, a trible curse; a curse to
the countries from which they were vio-
lently dragged—a curse to the wretches,
thus made like beast of burthen—and a
curse to those who violate all laws divine
or humane, by holding the fellow being
in slavery.

1622. The colony prospers. Settlers had
extended from James town, as far as the
Potomac.
