place, they were attacked by the natives.—
several were wounded on both sides in the
skirmish which ensued. Proceeding west-
ward in quest of a place of settlement, tiny
reached a peninsula on the north side of a
spacious river called by the natives Pow-
hatan, on which they unanimously resolved
to plant their infant colony. On the 13th
May they named the place Jamestown, and
the river upon which it was situate James
River, in honor of their King,
1608— The first remittance made to England
from an American colony, was two vessels
loaded with a glittering dirt that was san-
guinely expected to be gold dust, and some
Cedar wood.

The celebrated Captain John Smith ex-
plored the Chesapeake bay and its inlets on
botli shores to the Susquehanna River.—
Marshal in his history, says he sailed about
3000 miles in an open boat in doing so.—
The maps and charts constructed by him
during this exploration, were so accurate
as to be used as the foundation of all sub-
sequent delegations for 150 years. He
Was employed from the 24th July to the
7th September, exploring the upper section
of the Chesapeake, and was the first white
man that ever penetrated within the boun-
daries of the present state of Maryland.
