Garden plants and Roots.—Not only the
varieties that have been brought from Europe,
but many that are natives of this country, are
produced in great abundance.
ANIMALS—Many of the wild animals com-
mon to a new country, have almost disappear-
ed from Maryland. The Dear and the Bear
are now only hunted in the extreme western
county. The wolf is seldom troublesome
below the Blue Ridge. There is common to
the country, the Wild Cat, Fox, Mink,
Martin, Weasel, Otter, Skunk, Opossum,
Beaver, Hare, Racoon,Squirrel, Ground Mouse,
Musk Rat, Wood Rat, House Rat, Water
Rat, Mice, Mole, &c.
BIRDS—Of the feathered tribe,from the Ea-
gle to the Humming Bird, from the Wild
Turkey to the Rice Bird—from the Swan to
the Wakon—the catalogue is endless. For
plumage our birds are admitted to exceed
the birds of Europe. Europeans content
themselves with claiming birds of superior
note and melody. But they have nothing to
compare for variety to our Mocking Bird. For
the table, Canvas Back Ducks, taken at the
head of the Chesapeake, are considered a great
delicacy. The Black Head and Mallard Ducks
are but little inferior. Wild Geese and Swans-
