120 VOTES AND PROCEEDINGS, NOVEMBER SESSION, 1805.

RESOLVED, That the two directors to be appointed on the part of this state in the Farmers Bank of Mary,
land be elected by ballot, one of whom shall be a resident of the city of Annapolis or Anne-Arundel county,
upon the western shore, and the other a resident of the town of Easton or Talbot county, upon the eastern
shore; and that the person resident on the western shore as aforesaid, having the majority of ballots of all the
attending members of both branches of the legislature, shall be a director of the Farmers Bank of Maryland, and
the person resident on the eastern shore, having the majority of ballots of all the attending members of both
branches of the legislature, shall be a director of the branch bank of said Farmers Bank of Maryland; and the
persons having a majority of ballots as aforesaid shall be declared duly elected as aforesaid.

The house proceeded to the second reading of the resolution relative to Saint-John's college; on motion, the
question was put, That the further consideration of the same be referred to the first day of June next? Deter-
mined in the negative.

On motion, the question was put, That the words " and seven hundred and fifty pounds, heretofore appro-
priated to Washington college, " be inserted after the words " St. John's college ?" Resolved in the affirmative.

On motion, the question was put, That the words " of each" be inserted after the word " governors?" Re-
solved in the affirmative.

On motion, the question was put, That the words " to commence after the first day of June next, " be added
to the said resolution? Resolved in the affirmative.

The resolution being read throughout, the question was put, That the house assent to the same J The yeas
and nays being required, appeared as follow:

So it was resolved in the affirmative.

The resolutions relative to certain bills of exchange were sent to the senate by the clerk.

The clerk of the senate delivers the resolution to authorise congress to prevent the importation of slaves,
endorsed, " assented to with the proposed amendment; " which amendment was read and agreed to. The re-
solution in favour of Samuel Moale, endorsed, " assented to. " And the following message:

BY THE SENATE, January 27, 1806.
GENTLEMEN OF THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES,

WE have received information that the office of register of wills of Worcester county is vacant; we there-
fore propose to go immediately into the appointment of a person for that office. Mr. Matthew Hopkins and
Robert J. H. Handy are nominated by this house, and Mr. Williams and Mr. Thomas are appointed to join such
gentlemen as may be named by your house to count the ballots.

By order, T. W. HALL, clk.
Which was read.

Also the engrossed bills No. 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 98, 99, 101, 102, 103, 104 and 109, with the paper bills
thereof, severally endorsed, " read and assented to. "

The following message being read and agreed to, was sent to the senate by the clerk.

BY THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES, January 27, 1806.
GENTLEMEN OF THE SENATE,

THE house of delegates, deeply impressed with a sense of the meritorious services rendered to his country
by Henry Gassaway, late a lieutenant in the evolutionary war, believing that by poverty and indisposition he
is actually deprived of the necessaries as well as of the comforts of life, to relieve this war-worn soldier from
his distressing situation, passed a resolution, directing the treasurer of the western shore to advance to the
said Henry Gassaway one year's half pay. We are persuaded, that if you had been acquainted with the pecu-
liar situation of this old soldier, you would not have dissented from the resolution in his favour; we have there-
fore returned the said resolution, and hope you will reconsider and assent to it.

The following message was read, agreed to, and sent to the senate by the clerk.
BY THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES, January 27, 1806.

GENTLEMEN OF THE SENATE,

WE have received your message, mentioning the office of register of wills of Worcester county being vacant,
and proposing immediately to go into the appointment of a person to fill the vacancy. We agree to proceed
immediately to the appointment according to your message, and have appointed Mr. Hyland and Mr. Contee to
