THE committee to whom was referred, the memorial of Rebecca Hanson, (widow and relict of Alexander
Contee Hanson, late chancellor of Maryland, ) report, that they have taken the same into consideration, and
are of opinion, that gratitude for the able services of an useful citizen and worthy officer, whose life has been
devoted to the service of his country, ought, in this case, to induce the representatives of the people, to alle-
viate, in some small degree, that pressure of affliction under which the feelings of your memorialist are now
sinking.; bereaved of her only resource by the death of her partner, destitute of the means of subsistence, by
the amiable liberality of her late husband, whose purse was ever open to the cries of the indigent and the ne-
cessities of the poor, and languishing upon the bed of sickness, perhaps of death, under that excruciating cala-
mity lately inflicted upon her by the hand of Providence, your memorialist, in the opinion of your committee,
has claims upon the gratitude and liberality of the government, for some small mitigation of her woes. He
who drew his sword in the field for the assertion of your rights, and dedicated his talents in council to the es-
tablishment of your liberties, has secured a place in the grateful remembrance of his countrymen, which must
. ever prove an asylum to those he has left behind him, against the stings of indigence and the afflictions of po-
verty; they therefore submit the following resolution:
RESOLVED, That the treasurer of the western shore pay to Rebecca Hanson, widow and relict of Alexander
'Contee. Hanson, late chancellor of Maryland, the sum of —————— dollars, out of any unappropriated money
