English text of the charter appeared in the 1635 Rela-
tion, and that the Brown/Griswold/Jones versions
probably were printed in the late 1630s or 1640s.
We are grateful to the Wroth family, in particular L.
Kinvin Wroth, Dean of the University of Maine School
of Law, and his brother William Wroth, who encouraged
us to reprint this least known, yet highly significant,
essay by their father. The introductory essay on the
Maryland charter first appeared in a newspaper supple-
ment published by the Paul VI Institute for the Arts for
the Maryland Conference, and is reprinted here, slightly
expanded and in annotated form, with the permission of
the Institute and its director, the Reverend Michael
diTeccia Farina. We are also indebted to William E.
Culen, Printing Buyer, Department of General Services,
and E. John Schmitz & Sons, Inc., who not only ex-
pedited the production of this pamphlet, but also ap-
plied their considerable expertise in printing to ensure
the timely delivery of a carefully crafted product.
