The searcher is reminded here that insofar as the probate records are concerned most if
not all of those of Calvert County through the year 1776 are preserved in the records of the
Secretary of the Province and of the Prerogative Court which were formerly in the Land Office
and are now at the Hall of Records. Unfortunately, the law of 1784 which provided that an
abstract of every deed record be sent from the county to the Court of Appeals was not strictly
enforced, but three volumes have survived for this period: 1787-1817, 1863-1867, and 1873 to
the time of the fire. The original abstract volumes are in the Land Office; microfilm copies,
in the Hall of Records.

Note

The Metes and Bounds of the courthouse lot at Battle Town we found in Provincial Court
Judgments (W.T. No. 4, 1702, ff 126-27, Ms. Hall of Records). However the exact location
of the several county buildings and their appearance still escape us. A plausible effort to solve
both problems was made by Charles F. Stein. His carefully considered plan is here reprinted
with his kind permission (A History of Calvert County, Maryland, Baltimore, 1960, p. 222).
