less the same shall have been allowed by a majority of the
stockholders at a general meeting.
Sec. 9. And be it enacted, That the said bridge shall be
of a breadth sufficient to admit of carriage-ways, with a
strong partition between them, and a strong railing on each
side of the bridge, and shall be so constructed that the na-
vigation of the river may not thereby be injured or imped-
ed; and the said bridge, with all its profits, shall be and the
same is hereby vested in the said stockholders, their heirs
and assigns, for ever, as tenants in common, in proportion
to their respective shares, and shall be forever exempt from
the payment of any tax, imposition or assessment what-

Breadth of bridge

Sec. 10 And be it enacted, That so soon as the said
bridge shall have been completed, it shall be lawful for the
said company to demand and receive the following tolls and

mule or work ox, six and a quarter cents; for all riding
carriages, wagons, carts, sleighs and sleds, six and a quar-
ter cents, per wheel or runner; for every head of neat cat-
lambs, twenty cents, and in proportion thereto for a great-
er taken from any person for the carriage or toll than is al-
lowed by this act, or if any person shall be impeded, ob-
structed or injured, in consequence of his or her passage
across the said bridge, he, she or they, may recover against
the company, before any justice of this state, the amount
of the damages so sustained, and a fine of five dollars for

and for the information of travellers the president and ma-
nagers shall cause to be fixed, and always kept up at the
toll-gate, a printed list of the rates of tolls; and any person
or persons attempting forcibly to pass the said bridge with-
out paying, or refusing to pay, the same, after having pass-
ed, shall be liable to the like fine, recoverable in the like
manner, to the use of the said company; and the said pre-
sident and managers are empowered hereby to contract
monthly or yearly, with any person or persons, for the pas-
sage of the bridge for a certain and fixed sum in lieu of the
tolls authorised by this act, which sum or sums, if not
punctually paid at the time stipulated for the payment
thereof, shall be recovered before any justice of the peace
of this state as other debts are recoverable.

Sec. 11. And be it enacted, That the said commissioners
shall pay over to the president and managers all monies by
them respectively received, and the said president and ma-
nagers shall keep fair and just account of all monies re-
ceived by them from the said commissioners, and from the
subscribers to the said undertaking, on account of their se-
