COURT OF ADJOURNMENT - AUGUST 1692 Folio
1 ~ 8 August 1692 Court convenes; Commissioners present: Francis Jenckins, Capt. John Winder, James Dashiels, James Round, Thomas Jones, George Layfield, Capt. John King.
1 ~ Rowland Beavens & Samuel Heydon dismissed from Jury.
1 ~ Letter from Samuel Hopkins, unable to be present, read in Court; Hopkins states that he had ordered the Constable to confiscate the gun of Abraham Vansall, a “malitious and pernicious person”; Vansall had apparently shot and killed the horse of John Pope and Hopkins expects he will shoot more; “he is not worth my horse or other dumb beast and the Lord and himself only knows how many of his neighbors (horses) he hath been the death of”; no action of the Court is recorded.
1 ~ James Crawford, servant boy of Isaac Horsey, having no indenture, brought before Court; judged to be 14; arrived aboard ship Providence of London, William Mecoy, Master.
1 ~ James O’Dougherty, servant boy of Maj. Robert King, having no indenture, brought before Court; judged to be 16; arrived aboard ship Katherine of London Derry; Master, Capt. And---.
2 ~ Richard Matthews, servant boy of Thomas Harris, having no indenture, brought before Court; arrived on sloop from Jamaica, Stephen Sargeant, Master; Court withholds judgment until Harris shows what rights he has to Matthews.
2 ~ Anne Bowden, servant maid of William Round, having no indenture, brought before Court; judged to be 16; Round had her for a six year assignment, and asks no more; Court so orders.
2 ~ James Linley, servant of Nathaniel Innis, having no indenture, brought before Court; judged to be 12; arrival aboard ship Providence of London, William Mecoy, Master.
2 ~ Patrick Erwin, servant of Thomas Davis, having no indenture, brought before the Court; judged to be 13; arrived aboard ship Providence of London, William Mecoy, Master.
2 ~ Valentine Trubshaw, daughter of John Trubshaw deceased, apprenticed to Thomas Beauchamp; who will teach her to read and give her an ewe at age 12.
2 ~ Mary Trubshaw, daughter of John Trubshaw, deceased, apprenticed to Richard Plunkett; will teach her to sew, knit and, if able, to read; give her an ewe at age 12.
2 ~ Order for David Hazzard to appear for case of Thomas Jones vs. Francis Gunby.
2 ~ Petition of Samuel Marchment requests estate of Edmund Beauchamp, late County Clerk, be ordered to pay him 1200 lbs/tbco for a mare earlier sold to Beauchamp; Thomas Beauchamp administrator of the estate, admits debt.
3 ~ Petition of James Sangster requests estate of Edmund Beauchamp be ordered to pay him 2600 lbs/tbco for fees due; account entered on record; items mentions John Tayler, John Rousalo, John Pope, Teague Quillane, Bernard Ward, Anne Rice, William Burch, Henry Hall; Thomas Beauchamp, administrator, admits debt.
3 ~ Petition of Anne Catlin requests estate of Edmund Beauchamp be ordered to pay her for 395 lbs/tbco due for services to Beauchamp’s wife Sarah; Court orders Catlin to prove her account.
3 ~ Petition of Dr. John Vigerous requests estate of Benjamin Keizer be ordered to pay him 1162 lbs/tbco for care provide during Keizer’s illness; itemized account dated 25 September 1689 entered in record; Lawrence Crawford, administrator, admits debt; ordered to pay costs.
3 ~ Petition of Thomas Jones requests estate of Edmund Beauchamp be ordered to pay him 402 lbs/tbco for various goods; account dated 22 October 1688 entered in record; Thomas Beauchamp, administrator, admits debt.
5 ~ Petition of John Walker to be released from bond made in January Court for appearance of Jone Farlow; says he is no longer willing to be bound for her; petition granted and Sheriff ordered to take Farlow into custody until she give security.
5 ~ Petition of Martin Curtiss requests estate of Edmund Beauchamp be ordered to pay him 480 lbs/tbco which he claims is due him; Court orders Curtiss to first resolve account with the administrator.
5 ~ Case of William Morris, who is brought into Court by the Sheriff; a petition of Morris to Governor Copley is read in court; Morris claims in letter that he was unfairly accused and asks the Governor to instruct the County to let him free pending trial; Copley’s endorsement dated 30 April 1692 recommends they let Morris post bail; Court orders Morris to remain in custody of Sheriff until September Court. 6 ~ Petition of Elizabeth Smith, ward of Thomas Morris, that she receive her estate, since she is now of age; also requests household goods in custody of William Innis, per order of Samuel Hopkins; petition granted.
6 ~ Petition of Isaac Hayman (Heaman) that he be removed from taxlist since he is no longer able to work; petition granted; Robert Catlin asked to give recognizance for Hayman.
7 ~ Petition of Anne Walker, widow, that she may regain custody of her children Thomas, Samuel and Charles Roberts, from their guardians James Round, William Round and Thomas Morris, “for some reasons your petitioner hath”; not granted.
7 ~ Petition of Edmund Williams to be removed from list of taxables, describing himself as “a very aged decreppid person and not capable of getting his living”; not granted.
7 ~ Petition of Alexander Gold to have his daughter Elizabeth released from service, saying that she had completed the agreed five years under her master, James Henderson, now deceased; agreement made in 1684 when Elizabeth aged 9; Court rules Elizabeth serve according to rules in Act of Assembly; the terms of agreement are read and Court rules that the term of service is nine not five years.
8 ~ Report by William Porter and Richard Whitty on Court ordered inquire into differences between James Inglish and George Parks; recommend that Inglish pay Parks 900 lbs/tbco.
8 ~ The petition of Thomas Beauchamp, executor of Edmund Beauchamp, deceased, requests Court to declare the value of the estate in tobacco, it having been appraised in money; petitioner says there is no money to pay debts owed by the estate; the Court declares that it should be evaluated at six shillings to a hundredweight of tobacco.
8 ~ Record dated 15 March 1691/2 of finding from court ordered inquire to resolve dispute between George Parks and James Inglish; Richard Whitty and William Porter, acting for Court, order that Inglish is to pay Parks 900 lbs/tbco.
8 ~ Court adjourns for the day.
