SOMERSET JUDICIAL RECORDS 1693-94

[MSA C 1774-11, Loc. 1/48/2/37]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Somerset Judicial Records 1693-94, identified in the Maryland State Archives as MSA C1774-11, records the proceedings of the Somerset County Court from August Court 1693 to January Court 1694/5. The subsequent liber of Somerset Judicial Records for 1695-96 commences with August 1695, so records for the Court sessions of March 1694/5 and June 1695 have apparently been lost.
The first folio of this volume identifies it as Liber LD and contains three oaths for convenient reference as needed: Oath of Loyalty, Oath of Abhorrence, and Oath for Commissioners (See Transcription). This is followed by an alphabetical index of Court actions comprising nine folios. The Judicial Records proper then follow on folios enumerated from 1 to 163, commencing with a list of Writs Returnable (pending actions). The final two folios (164-65) contain several entries from later dates unrelated to the Court actions of 1693-94.
Court sessions were held in January, March, June, August and November of each year as required by the Province. These invariably commenced on the 2nd Tuesday of the month and generally lasted about a week. In adddition, some actions would be taken at interim times in Courts of Adjournment. Preceeding the records of each session, a list of Writs Returnable is entered, and at the end of each session a list of cases settled informally or dismissed is recorded.
The essence of each separate action in the Court record has been abstracted and is presented in the following pages. Particular care has been taken to note all individuals cited in the records so that they can be readily identified through an electronic search process. Some liberty has been taken to rectify the spellings of names, when these are inconsistent or deviate from more standard usage. In some but not all cases the spelling as it appears in the actual text is shown in parentheses following the rectified spelling.
