14 NOVEMBER 1695 71 Court convenes; Commissioners present: Francis Jenckins, James Dashiels, Thomas Dixon, Matthew Scarbrough, Thomas Newbold, Samuel Hopkins, James Round, Thomas Jones, Edmund Howard, George Layfield, John King. 71 ~ Petition of James Traine, now 18, and Margarett Traine, now 15, to choose their guardians; ask that John Meclaster be appointed; Court so orders; Meclaster to post security. 71 ~ John West, Court Clerk, makes oath to add two fines, for William Jenckins and Mary Baskett, which were omitted from list of October 1695; 71 ~ Court orders the County levy by laid on 2nd Tuesday in December. 71 ~ Court orders a bridge to be built over head of St. Martins River, per directions proposed by Mr. Samuel Hopkins and Mr. James Round. 71 ~ Court orders a puncheon bridge and road constructed in John Henderson’s district by the Impassable Branch between Pitts Creek and John Williams. 72 ~ Thomas Newbold brings his servant, John Morris, before Court; claims 95 runaway days and presents account for 1590 lbs/tbco expended in obtaining his return; Court orders Harris(sic) serve 950 days extra servitude and pay of 1590 lbs/tbco; Newbold says he will accept three additional years as full satisfaction if Morris serve well and faithfully. (See Transcription) 72 ~ Francis Jenckins presents account of William Onorton from 1687 totalling 712½ lbs/tbco for taxes and fees paid; also mentions item of Samuel Cooper; Robert Pirrie, attorney for the estate, admits debt; Court orders payment. 72 ~ James Round presents account of William Onorton from 1693/4 totalling 470 lbs/tbco; Robert Pirrie, attorney for the estate, admits debt; Court orders payment. 72 ~ Bill of debt signed 3 September 1694 by William Onorton entered in record; promises payment of 320 lbs/pork to William Wouldhave at Snow Hill by last of December following; witnesses Thomas Willie and William Onorton; Robert Pirrie, attorney for the estate, admits debt; Court orders payment. 73 ~ Daniel King (Indian) complains to Court that John Parker is building on his land; Court orders Parker to desist until bounds are ascertained; directs that four English men and four Indians inspect the lines and make report; appoints Capt. Edmund Howard, Rowland Beavins, Sen. & Jun., Robert Smith; “the King” appoints Morumsco James, Nunswango Dick, Pocomoke Thomas, Assateague Weequonah. (See f.12 and f.22) 73 ~ Case against Anne Rice for thievery; Peter Dent, Clerk of Indictments, accuses her of taking 3 pair of womens shoes, one boot, sealing wax, and red lead belonging to Ellis Coleman in December 1694, valued at 20 shillings; pleads not guilty; Sheriff calls Jury: Edward Green (foreman), George Goddard, Francis Joyce, James Langrell, James Atkinson, William Lawrence, Robert Smith, William Owens, Adam Heatch, Archibald Smith, John Blizard, Thomas Cary; Jury returns guilty verdict; Court orders fourfold payment with security; omits corporal punishment; Rice makes bond for £6, security Mr. Scarbrough. 74 ~ Grand Jury returned the following presentments: Robert Tyra (Tyer) for not clearing highways as ordered; informer Samuel Showell. Smith, Anne Goldsmith Richard Davis & Sarah Dorman, daughter of John Dorman, dec’d, for cohabitation; informer Wm Fausett Henry Smith, planter & Elizabeth Neugen for cohabitation; informers, the Vestry Anne Sedbury, for adultery with James Perdue; informer Edward Wheeler Thomas Evans, for putting away his wife, and cohabiting with Mary Riggen, daughter of Darby Riggen; informer Mr. Thomas Jones; evidences Darby, Elizabeth, John and Matthew Riggen 75 ~ Grand Jury dismissed. 75 ~ Daniel Dunnahoe petition asks that his bond for good behavior be remitted; granted. 75 ~ William Stevenson requests payment for 17 days attendance at Court; case of Ellis Coleman vs. Anne Rice. 75 ~ Livin Denwood, Pltf. vs. John Jenner, blacksmith, Deft. for 963 lbs/pork; Samuel Worthington, attorney for Denwood, presents bill of debt signed 13 May 1695 by Jenner promising to pay at Denwoods dwelling plantation; witnesses Charles Williams, John Winsloe; Sheriff returns writ non est inventus; Court rules attachment against goods of Jenner; Worthington to pay security in consideration of £10 debt owed to Jenner. 76 ~ William Henry, Pltf. vs. John Jenner, Deft. for debt of 655 lbs/pork; Sam Worthington, attorney for Henry, presents account from 1694 with mechandize provided by Henry totaling 1200½ lbs/pork, with balance due of 655 lbs; Subsheriff returns writ non est inventus; Court orders attachment of goods of Jenner; Henry makes bond for £6 to secure the attachment; security Henry Hudson. 77 ~ Court adjourns for the day. |
