152 ~ [8 January 1694/5] Decisions of the House of Burgesses from October 1694 read in Somerset Court
By the Burgesses of Assembly October the 17th 1694 Proposed that the fourty pounds of tobacco p/ poll in Ann Arundell County not collected the last year goe towards the building of a Church in Ann Arundell Towne and consented unto nemine contra dicente. That the said tax of fourty pounds tob. p/ poll in the said County be collected the next year and be paid to the Vestry men for and towards the building of the said Church in the said towne. And what the building of the said Church requires more to be left to the consideration of the next Sessions of Assembly for the levying of the same in the said County. Signed p/ order C. Then was read the following, viz. By the Burgesses of Assembly October 18th 1694 VOTED that all the Counties in this Province that have not levied the 40 lbs of tobacco p/ poll for and toward the maintenance of Ministers or building of Churches the last year that the same be not levied this year but the next year ensuing, eighty pounds of tobacco p/poll be levied & collected in the said Counties. Maryland I doe hereby strictly charge and command that the severall Votes and Orders above mentioned be duely obeyed and observed, and that all and singular the Sheriffs of the several & respective Counties within this Province perform their duty therein as likewise give notice to all Com’rs & Officers Military & Civil and all other persons any wayes mentioned in a certaine Order of Councell bearing date the 31st day of July last past for making due returne for the severall matters & things by the said order enjoyned therein unto this Board, that such as have not already fully complyed with the sererall particulars therein contained & required they doe take care to make due returns pursuant to former Order unto this Board by the first day of the next Provincial Court to be held in Febry next as they and every of them shall answer the contrary at their peril. Given under my hand and seal at the Citty of St. Maries this 10th day of November in the sixth year of their Ma’ties Reign anno Domini 1694 I doe likewise further order that all the penall Laws be read pursuant to the late Act of Assembly and that all persons concerned take care to put all the Laws in execution under pain of being preceeded against according to Law. ¤ Sealed Fra Nicholson
