ble at a distance of two hundred (200) feet, and shall also dis-
play on the rear of such vehicle a lamp so placed that it shall
show a red light from the rear and a white light at the side
so arranged as to illuminate the rear registration marker; and
a motor-cycle shall display on the forward part one white light
and a red light to the rear; provided, however, that the opera-
tor of such motor vehicle may proceed to his destination in
event of a bona fide failure of one or more of his lights to
operate, if he sounds his bell, horn or other signalling device
at least once in every two hundred (200) feet, does not pro-
ceed at a rate of speed greater than one mile in six minutes,
and takes the first reasonable opportunity to put his lights in
order, otherwise to be deemed guilty of a violation of the afore-
going provision.

No person shall operate a motor vehicle upon any highway
in this State equipped with an electric bulb or other device of
a greater rated capacity than thirty candle power no matter
how the same may be shaded, covered or obscured.

(4) Mufflers. No driver or operator of any motor car,
taxicab, automobile, motor truck or motor-cycle shall use any
cut-out, fitting or other apparatus or device which will allow
the exhaust gases from the engine of the motor vehicle to
escape into the atmosphere without first passing through a
silencer, expansion chamber or otter contrivance suitable and
sufficient for reducing as far as may be reasonably practicable
the. noise which would otherwise be caused by the escape of
the said gases; provided that this regulation shall apply only
to a motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine,
and only within the limits of cities, towns and villages in the
State of Maryland.

(5) Penalties. Any person violating any of the provisions of
this section shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and upon
conviction subject to a fine not exceeding twenty-five dollars
($25. 00) for each first offense.

SPEED OF MOTOR VEHICLES.
(1) General Provisions.

149. No person shall operate a motor vehicle or motor-
cycle over any public highway of this State recklessly
or at a rate of speed greater than is reasonable and proper,
having regard to the width, traffic and use of the highway,
or so as to endanger the property and life or limb of any per-
son, or without due regard to wear upon said highway, so as
