1692 LAWS OF MARYLAND.

SEC. 10. And be it enacted, That Section 5 of Chapter 493
of the Acts of 1912 is hereby repealed.

SEC. 11. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect from the first day of May in the year 1915.

CHAPTER 852.

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact with amendments, Sections 84
and 86, and to repeal Section 86-A of the Code of Public
Local Laws of Maryland, Article 4, title "City of Baltimore,"
sub-title '' Charter.''

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Sections 84 and 86 of the Code of Public Local
Laws of Maryland, Article 4, title "City of Baltimore," sub-
title '' Charter,'' be and they are hereby repealed and re-enacted
with amendments so as to read as follows:

84. There shall be a Department of Public Improvements
of the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore, the head of which
Department shall be the Chief Engineer of Baltimore, who
shall be appointed by the Mayor in the mode prescribed in Sec-
tion 25 of this Article and hold his office as therein provided,
except that the first Chief Engineer who shall be appointed in
pursuance of this Act may be appointed by the Mayor as soon
after the passage of this Act as to him may seem proper, to
hold office until the first Monday in October. 1915. The said
Chief Engineer of Baltimore shall be a civil engineer of stand-
ing in his profession and shall have been in active practice and
have had responsible charge of work for at least five years; he
shall have supervision of all engineering questions and matters
connected with any and every public improvement in Balti-
more City or elsewhere, made by the Mayor and City Council
of Baltimore, or any Department, Board or agency thereof,
and all plans and specifications for all such public improve-
ments involving any engineering question or questions shall be
submitted to him and be subject to his approval. He shall take
the place of the City Engineer as Chief Engineer of the Pav-
ing Commission and shall advise the Board of Estimates on all
engineering matters; he shall perform such other duties as may
be imposed upon him by ordinances of the Mayor and City
Council of Baltimore or by the Board of Estimates not incon-
