At a Session of the General Assembly of Maryland, begun and held at the City of Annapolis, on the third
day of December, 1861, His Excellency, THOMAS H. HICKS, being Governor, and ended on the tenth
day of March, 1862, His Excellency, AUGUSTUS W. BRADFORD, being Governor, the following laws
were enacted, to wit:
CHAPTER 1.

AN ACT to authorize the Commissioners of Mont-
gomery County to raise money for the purpose of
building a Jail.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That the Commissioners of Mont-
gomery county be and they are hereby authorized
and empowered to borrow, upon the credit of the
county, a sum of money not exceeding five thou-
sand dollars, for the purpose of building a jail.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the said
Commissioners may and they are hereby authorized
to levy upon said county, a tax on the assessable
property of said county, to reimburse the said loan;
not more than one thousand dollars, and interest
to be raised in any one year, until the said loan is
paid off.

Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That the said
Commissioners be and they are hereby authorized
to adopt such plans and make such-contracts, and
do all other acts necessary in the erection and com-
pletion of the said jail, with as little delay as prac-
ticable.
