Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That a committee of three on the part of the
Senate and an equal number on the part of the
House of Delegates, be appointed to inquire into
the propriety of purchasing on the part of the
State a portion of the Battle Field of Antietam,
not exceeding twenty acres, for the purpose of a
State and National Cemetery, in which the bones
of our heroes who fell in that great struggle, and
are now bleaching in the upturned furrows, may
be gathered for a decent burial, and their memo-
ries embalmed in some suitable memorial
Resolved, That the aforesaid Committee be, and
they are hereby authorized to inquire into the ex-
pediency of erecting at the expense of the State, a
suitable Monument of Native Granite, upon the
Battle Field of South Mountain, in memory of
Gen. Reno and his brave companions in arms,
who fell upon that spot and consecrated it forever
to the genius and spirit of American Patriotism,
and to every lover of Liberty and Laws through-
out the world. And that the said Committee
shall have leave to report by bill or otherwise.
