rected to distribute the same number of copies of
said Digest, and in the same way as the copies of
the Maryland Reports are now authorized by law
to be distributed, and the residue to sell or ex-
change for such other books as may be required in
the State Library; provided, nevertheless, that he
shall retain thirty-five copies in the Library for
the use thereof.

WHEREAS, It has pleased the Almighty Disposer of
Human Events to remove from the theatre of
life, that good man, accomplished scholar, peer-
less orator and statesman, Edward Everett,
whereby the country has been deprived, in a
period of national trial, of the valuable and im-
portant services of one of its proudest ornaments
and most able defenders; and whereas, the loss
of such a man is no mere private bereavement,
but a vast public calamity affecting all classes
in community; therefore,

Resolved, That the General Assembly of Mary-
land, being profoundly sensible, as an integral
part of the Union of the severe loss sustained by
the country at large, desire to place on record this
expression of their profound respect for the deceased
and unaffected sorrow on the sad occasion of his
death.

Resolved, That in the demise of Edward Everett
the Republic of Letters has lost one of its ripest
and most accurate scholars; oratory its most pol-
ished, graceful and eloquent'exponent; statesman-
ship one of its most sagacious, harmoniously pro-
portioned and patriotic expounders.

Resolved, That in the purity and loveliness of
his private character, in the various mental endow-
ments which attract the universal admiration of
mankind, in the patriotism which knows no com-
promise with treason, and is ever ready to vindicate
