BOOKER T. WASHINGTON

at his Summer Home, Highland Beach

Born in Calvert County, Maryland, June, 1848. Died Dec. 31, 1910. His
father, Captain George Bowen, although a slave, commanded a sloop, sailing to
and from Calvert County to Baltimore. Young George came to Baltimore and en-
listed in the United States Navy as a mess boy, serving under Admiral Donaldson.
With this experience he later became steward of Baltimore's famous Atheneum
Club, formerly at northeast corner of Charles and Franklin.Streets. The Baltimore
Club, the Merchants Club and the Democratic Club were later added to his
stewardship. He was famous for the terrapin he prepared and shipped as far
as Paris, France.

He served many times on the Grand Jury.

He married Martha Ann Thomas and is survived by seven children:

Nannie B. Brown, George T. Bowen, Jr. of New York, Marion B.
Aldib, Martha B. Warsoma, Alexander Bowen, Evelyn B. White,
and Edna B. Newton.
