BRUCE, BLANCH KELSO—U. S. Senator. Born a slave Farmville, Va., March 1, 1841,
given instruction by his master's son. Moved to Misrouri during Civil War, working and
teaching in Hannibal. Attended Oberlin. Became a planter in Mississippi in 1868. 1870
Seigeant'at-Arms in State Senate; held office of assessor, sheriff and tax collector of Bolivar
Co.; served as county superintendent of schools; member Board of Levee Commissioners.
Elected to U. S. Senate from Mississippi and took his seat March 4. 1875. Appointed
May 19, 1881 Register of U. S. Treasury serving for 4 years. Married 1878 Josephine Wil-
son of Cleveland. Served as recorder of deeds for Dist, of Columbia for 2 years. Appointed
register of U. S. Treasury again December 2, 1897, but died March 17, 1898.

LYONS, JUDSON WHITLOCKE—Lawyer. Born Burke Co., Ga. August 15, 1860. L.L.B.
Howard U. 1884. Admitted to bar 1884, practiced in Augusta. Ga. Married Jane Hope
1890. Registerar U. S. Treasury 1898-1906. Member of Republican National Committee.
Trustee and President Haines Normal Inst., Augusta. Died June 22, 1924.
NAPIER, JAMES CARROLL—Lawyer. Born near Nashville June 9, 1845, son of free
negroes. Educated Wilburforce, Oberlin & Howard Law School, 1872. Married 1878
Nettie Langston. Negro leader in civic and economic affairs in Term. Helped organize
One Cent Savings Bank, now known as Citizens Bank and Trust Co. of which cashier
until his death April 21. 1940. Register of U. S. Treasury 1911-1913. Refused appoint-
ments as consul to Brazil and Consul-General to Liberia. Housing project in Nashville
named for him.

VERNON, WILSON TECUMSEH—Bishop. Born July 11, 1871 Lebanon, Missouri.
Educated Lincoln U. 1886-1889. Also Wilburforce U. D.D. and L.L.D. Married Emily
Embry 1901. Pres. Western U. in Kansas 1896-1906. Registrar of U. S. Treasury 1906-
1910. Supervisor of government schools 1911-1912. Pres. Campbell College in Mississippi
1912-1915. Pastor of Avery Chapel A. M. E. Church, Memphis. Elected to Bishopric 1920.
Author of "Uplifting of a Race" and "Democracy and the Negro." Died July 25, 1944.
