ELMER A. HENDERSON
Director of Colored Schools
Elmer A. Henderson, the Director
of Colored Schools is a product of the
Baltimore School System. He is a
graduate of Morgan State College.
Mr. Henderson has done graduate
work at the University of Pennsylvania.
He is also a member of the Phi Beta
Sigma Fraternity. The Director has
served as president of the Association
of Administrators and Supervisors in
the Colored Schools of Baltimore and
as Vice President of the City Wide
Colored Teachers" Association. He has
contributed interesting articles to Re-
ligious and Educational Magazines. Aside from being an educator. Mr. Hender-
son is also a churchman. He has always been interested in Church School work
and at present he is conference superintendent of the A. M. E. Church Schools
for the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia.
The Director became an elementary teacher in the city of Baltimore in
1906 at the age of 19. In 1915 he was appointed a critic teacher. After out-
standing success in this position Mr. Henderson was appointed Vice Principal
in-charge of School No. 129 and a year later he was appointed Principal of
the same school. Due to the Housing Project in the city, School No. 129 has
been abandoned.
Mr. Henderson has also served as Principal of Schools No. 100 and No.
101. Elementary School No. 101 is the largest elementary school in the city
of Baltimore. In January 1941 he was appointed Principal of the Booker T.
Washington Junior High School with an enrollment of over 2500 children.
Mr. Henderson has also served as Principal of Evening Schools and Summer
Schools.
This represents 37 successful years up from the ranks in the Baltimore
Public School System.
